Antestor
The return of the Black death
Cacophonous 1998

Ok. I'm sold. This is with no doubt one of the very best albums out there. The Norwegian band Antestor play a medivial Black-Metal that other band in this genre are having a hard time to match. Lyrics are in both english and norwegian and that really brings the right feeling to the vocals.
There really isn't anything to complain about except for the psycopatic corpsepaint. This wasn't the bands own idea though so they're forgiven.
You just NEED this album. Get it in your local metalstore, NOW!

Believer
Dimensions
REX/Roadrunner - 1993

This album is a really strange release. The first half of the album consists of normal Power/Trash Metal with some speed influences. But the disharmonics that are mixed into it are awesome. The lead singerKurt Bachman has a really strange voice and he gives Believer a special "sound".
I'ts when you get to the second half of the CD, the 20 minute song "Triology of Knowledge", your eyes and ears open up. Strings, soprano, cello and lots of other classic music mixed with the heaviness of Trash. And it sounds GREAT. Very impressing indeed. Believer has created a style of their own and they are using this new style in an excellent way. Believe me, this is really something worth purchasing. Part one is just standard noise but "Triology of knowledge" is surely worth your bucks.
Line-up:
Kurt Bachman - Vocals, guitar
Joey Daub - Drums
Jim Winters - Bass, Guitar

Extol
Burial
Endtime Productions 1998

Norwegian death-metal at its best! Extol has released their long-awaited CD and it is about as good as we all could dream of.
Heavy and brutal but plenty of room for musical adventures makes this album a bulls-eye.
The only thing that keeps it from getting top-scores is the fact that many songs sound like each other, which keeps you from listening to it more then twice in a row.
Line-up:
Peter Espevoll - Vocals
Eystein Holm - Bass
Ehrister Espevall - Guitar
David Husvek - Drums
Ole Borud - Guitars and other stuff

GROMS
Ascension
Arctic Serenades 1996

This release from the Norwegian deathmetal supremes GROMS is something that will cause severe hearing injuries, since it's impossible not to play LOUD. An excellent mix of Trash- and Death metal makes this album a hit.

Horde
Hellig Usvart
Nuclear Blast 1994

Interesting. Most interesting.
A guy called "Anonymous" (his real name is a secret) has recorded an album, all by himself. From a musical point of view it stinks. Bad recording, bad sound and bad melodies. But it's cool. Really cool. "Hellig Usvart" is norwegian for "Holy unblack" and this was the first Christian Blackmetal album released, and that's on Nuclear Blast.
Like I was saying, it's cool.

Metanoia
In darkness or in light
ROWE productions 1995

After having heard Metanoia on several metal compilations I must admit that I was a bit sceptical about them, but their album was a happy surprise. The lead "singer" has a very special voice that a friend of mine commented with "It sounds as if he's standing in a very small wardrobe". The music is best described as "glamorous deathmetal" since they've managed to mix the speed of the 80:s with the heaviness of Deathmetal grind.

Mortification
Scrolls of the Megilloth
Intense Records 1991

Mortifications second real album is the heaviest and in my opinion one of the very best Christian Metal albums ever made. It's fast, heavy and messy. Steve Rowe's grinding vocals are on this album really heavy and low pitched. A great album with a heaviness that we rarely see on christian albums. Great!
Line-up:
Steve Rowe - Bass and Vocals
Michael Carlisle - Guitar
Jason Sherlocke - Drums

Mortification
Post Momentary Affliction
Intense Records 1992

This Mortification album is a bit experimental. Heavy Death/Grind tracks are mixed with synthetic intros and weird sounds that get rather disturbing in the long run. The "normal" tracks however are very good and makes the album really worth bying.
Line-up:
Steve Rowe - Bass and Vocals
Michael Carlisle - Guitar
Jason Sherlocke - Drums

  Northern Lights
Norwegian Metal Compilation
Rowe productions 1996

This compilation has become a bit old now but it's really worth hearing, especially if you want some old material from your favourites.
There are 4 Norwegian groups on this CD:
Schaliach: A talented group consisting of two guys, one that plays all the music and one that performs the vocals. The three songs are from their CD "Sonrise".
GROMS: A group that I had the opportunity to listen to at a concert a while ago. Their three songs are from the album " Ascension".
Extol: Great band, great songs. I fyou haven't bought their full-length release "burial" yet, do so.
Antestor: This material is old, but not too bad. On their album "the return of the black death" they have evolved a lot but the three songs on this compilation are not bad at all.

Paramaecium
Within the Ancient Forest
Paramaecium - 1996

An outstanding performance by Australia's premier Doom/Death band. This album contains everything from the most extreme death-metal to a cembalo from the baroque age. As most Doom-metal albums, the average track length is well over 7 minutes. The lyrics consists of a short summary of a novel that lead singer Andrew Tompkins has written. He recommends the buyer to purchase the novel in order to fully understand the lyrics. Cheap trick... :)
It's heavy, it's soft, it's extreme, it's opera, it's death, it's a piano, it's Paramaecium at their best.
Lineup:
Andrew Tompkins - Vocals and Bass
Jason De Ron - Guitar
Chris Burton - Guitar
Jayson Sherlock - Drums

Raise the Dead
Australian Metal Compilation II
Rowe Productions 1994

A nice compilation with some Australian groups.
Ethereal Scourge, Embodiment and Metanoia now have their own albums out there. Vomoth is some kind of Black Metal, not good but a bit interesting. Screams of Chaos is some industrial, metal band that would have been best left out. Nice record though, worth your money.

Vengeance Rising
Anthology
Intense Records 1991

This is a "best of" album with trash/speed metal giants Vengeance Rising. The band released four albums and this collection contains the best from them all. Classics like "Human Sacrifice" and "White Throne" are mixed with newer material like "You will be hated" and "Bishop of souls". It's an album full of Christian metal classics that you cannot afford to miss.

Veni Domine
Material Sanctuary
Thunderload - 1993

I've never heard anything like this before in my life (except for their last album "Fall Babylon Fall"). The Swedish band Veni Domine has made a great success all over the world with their slow, heavy and melodic Doom Metal. Lead singer Fredrik Olsson has a rarely high pitched sound that reminds me of Michael Sweet from Stryper. But there are no glamorous metal behind him. It's slow, extremely heavy and well played Doom Metal that I think almost anyone would like.
Lineup:
Fredrik Ohlsson - Vocals - 2nd guitar
Torbjörn Weinesjö - Lead guitar
Thomas Weinesjö - Drums
Magnus Thorman - Bass guitar
